GACS Maifest - May 16
On May 16, the German-American Cultural Society (GACS) hosted a fundraiser at the residence of Dr. Guenter and Dr. Karin Memmert for the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis Kirche in Berlin, which is in urgent need of extra funds to repair the tower. More than 100 people attended the evening, among them TV star Eric Braeden and actress Elke Sommer. The event, mainly organized by Jeanette Truppe and Karin Memmert, also drew corporate sponsors such as AirBerlin, Underberg, Wendemuseum and many more.

On May 12, Nikolaus Helbich of German Health Plans in New York gave an interesting presentation about the latest developments and new opportunities for German citizens to get health care in Germany while living in the US. The event was co-sponsored by Melanie Strauss of Dolce Vita Gourmet, Chalet Edelweiss, and Maximilian's. Dr. Goodman and his wife Bita as well as German hairdresser Josef Pergi contributed gift certificates to the raffle.

Fundraiser for the Goethe International Charter School

On May 2, Consul General Dr. Stocks and his wife Christine generously opened their doors to host a fundraiser for Goethe International Charter School (2,3). Because of new budget cuts from the Unified School District, an additional 50,000 dollars were needed to ensure the opening of the school on September 8, 2009. Founder Elke Miller (6, r.), director Lucy Fowlers (6,l.), the board (2) and all the volunteers (4) were very touched by the outpouring of support from the more than 100 guests, most notably from Helga Rostagno (8, 9, c.) and her husband Juan, Thomas Beer (5), and city councilman Tom La Bonge. Mrs. Stock even auctioned off her flower bouquet. It was bought for $350 by Thomas Beer (5).

Final EURO 2008 Celebration in Los Angeles

On June 29, 2008, the final day of the European Soccer Championship, the Consul General of Switzerland in Los Angeles, Brigitta Schoch-Dettweiler, and her Austrian counterpart Martin Weiss (photo 1 with Ruth Andrea, SWISS Air Lines, in the center) invited community leaders to a festive garden reception. More than 300 guests attended. The evening's high point was a live auction with prizes like two business class round trip tickets on SWISS International Air Lines. The proceeds, over $10,000, will benefit the two youth organizations "Kicks for Kids" and "Fundacion Chivas de Corazon USA". Photos: Karin Memmert.

Austrian designer Sigmar Berg and his wife Petra Bergauer invited members of the press for a sneak preview of some of the latest summer sunglass models. Journalists Karen Loftus, Elyse Glickman, Diana Hoffmann and German World publisher Petra Schuermann enjoyed the presentation.

The Bavarian Inn in Milwaukee Wisconsin

On Saturday, May 31, 2008, the Bavarian Inn in Milwaukee Wisconsin celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a Heimat Abend. The program started at 7pm with music by the Mueller Familie Musi. The two Schuhplattler and Trachtenvereinen, D'Lustig'n Wendlstoana and SVEV D'Oberlandler performed traditional Schuhplattler dances. The original Bavarian Inn is immortalized by a mural on the wall. The modern chalet stands proud on the grounds which include Old Heidelberg Park (home of an annual 3 weekend Oktoberfest) and 3 soccer fields. A birthday cake was served and Wisconsin State Senator, Alberta Darling presented a plaque to the Bavarian Inn (Joe Wittig accepting). - Petra Theurich for German World.

The Walross IV from the Academic Sailing Club of Berlin arrived in L.A. for a week-long layover for maintenance and crew change. The sailors were warmly greeted by the Los Angeles Berlin Sister City Committee and Consul General Dr. Stocks.

German Actress Hannelore Elsner in Los Angeles

On occasion of the US- premiere "Vivere" on January 31, 2008 a film by Angelina Maccarone and Anita Elsani starring Hannelore Elsner and Esther Zemmering, Elsner, Zimmering and Elsani came to Los Angeles to promote their movie.
The Goethe Institute Los Angeles honored the acclaimed German actress Hannelore Elsner with a short retrospective showing her movies "Alles auf Zucker" by Dani Levy and "No Place to go" ("Die Unberührbare") by Oskar Roehler.

Minister President Dr. Ruettgers from North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW) and Representatives of the NRW Film Foundation visit Los Angeles

Talking about filming in Germany, Studio Babelsberg and Bavaria Film Studio come to mind and with a budget of over 45 Mio. US Dollar provided by the German Film Funds filming and producing in Germany is becoming more and more attractive. However, it is the state of North-Rhine Westphalia that is home to the largest film and TV production facilities.
